GM Georg Meier
Bio
Georg Meier is a German-born grandmaster who now represents Uruguay. He learned chess at the age of three.
He won the German Under-16 Championship in 2003 and became a GM in 2007. In 2011, he won the European Team Championship with the German team, scoring 5.5/9 on board two. Meier reached his maximum rating—2671 Elo— ranking number 75 in the world in January 2012.
Meier shared third with GM Michael Adams at the Grenke Chess Classic 2013 tournament, one point behind GM Fabiano Caruana and 1.5 points behind GM Viswanathan Anand. The next year, Meier shared second with GM Peter Leko at the Dortmund Sparkassen Tournament 2014, ahead of GM Arkadij Naiditsch, Adams, GM Ruslan Ponomariov, and GM Vladimir Kramnik. Meier considers this victory vs the 14th world chess champion the best game in his career. 
In 2017, Meier qualified for the first season of the Speed Chess Championship and lost to GM Sergey Karjakin in the round of 16.
Meier played in several PRO Chess League seasons with the Stockholm (later Baden Baden) Snowballs, reaching the semifinals in 2017 and the final in 2019.
Meier led the Grenke Bank team that won the inaugural FIDE Online World Corporate Chess Championship in 2021.
Meier is a fine endgame technician and the world’s leading expert in the French Rubinstein variation as Black and Catalan as White. He analyzed for several days a particular variation of the Catalan and reaped the fruit of his preparation in a game vs. GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu that lasted many moves, but was decided in 20.
In his Lessons course, Meier teaches this opening favored by the world’s best players, a way to get long-term pressure with the white pieces, even against a perfect defense.
Since November 2021, Meier has represented Uruguay, his mother's home country. (Her parents migrated to South America as refugees from the Holocaust.)
