In 2013 Magnus Carlsen edged Vladimir Kramnik on tie-break in the candidates to qualify for a match with Anand. That match was less close as Carlsen won with an undefeated 6.5-3.5 to take the title.

Carlsen vs Anand 2014

Vishy Anand impressively won the candidates tournament immediately after losing his title and earned another shot. Carlsen won decisively a second time 6.5-4.5.

Carlsen vs Karjakin 2016

Karjakin scored the first win in game eight. Carlsen struck back with a win in game 10. Carlsen won the rapid tie-breaks, finishing off the match with a spectacular sacrifice.

Carlsen vs Caruana 2018

In 2018 Fabiano Caruana qualified to challenge Magnus Carlsen. All 12 games in the match were drawn. In the rapid tie-break Carlsen won all three games to retain his title.

In 2021 Carlsen defended his title for a final time in a match against Ian Nepomniachtchi. After five tense draws, the fireworks started with a 136-move game six as Carlsen broke through and then dominated the rest of the match.
